For Large Wood Stoves, How to Choose My Pellet Burner?

Q30 with its QR31 extension in a large foyer

For large or VERY large wood stoves, here is a simple method to define the QAÏTO pellet burner model.

The company CONFORT DOMO FRANCE (CDF) offers a range of several pellet burners and assists you in choosing the one that will provide the best compromise according to the size of your stove and the surface of your living area.

The length of the logs helps define the model of pellet burner that suits you.

  • for small or medium-sized fireplaces (logs from 33 to 45 cm), please refer to the article ''How to Choose the Pellet Burner That Matches My Wood Stove?''
  • 'Large' fireplaces
    • if you use logs from 45 to 55 cm, the fireplace will be considered 'large'.
    • CDF thus offers you the Q30 model, whose burner size is 30 cm in length and 25 cm in width.
    • you can fill the burner to 100% of its capacity, i.e., 3.5 kg of pellets
      • 3.5 kg of pellets correspond to 16 kWatts of calories.
      • depending on the quality and efficiency of your setup, you will have a yield of 45 to 55%, meaning that only a part of the available calories will be used to heat your living space.
      • the combustion duration will be approximately between 1 hour and 15 minutes to 1 hour and 45 minutes depending on various parameters.
    • NB: cast iron retains heat for several hours after the last burn.
  • 'Large' fireplaces'' used to heat more than one room
    • if your living space consists of a living room and a dining room, for example, the QAÏTO Q30 may be insufficient.
    • CDF therefore offers the Q30 model with the QR31 riser
    • The QR31 riser is placed on top of the Q30 burner and allows adding 1.5 kg of pellets more.
    • the capacity of the Q30 + QR31 is then 5 kg of pellets (1/3 of a bag), which equals 23 kWatts of calories.
    • CDF recommends filling it:
      • at the 1st load (cold burner): to 100% of its capacity
      • at the 2nd load (hot burner): to 90% of its capacity, leaving part of the bottom of the burner without pellets to allow combustion air to pass through and restart the fire without fire starters and without smoke.
      • depending on the efficiency of your stove and the configuration of your living space, you will have 40 to 60% of this heat available for heating the room
      • the combustion duration will be approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours.
    • Reminder: efficiency is the difference between what is available and what is delivered in terms of heat, thus between what you put in the burner (input) and what the wood stove returns to you (usable heat to heat your room)
      • Each house configuration is different. Efficiency can differ from one house to another, just as with wood stoves or any heating appliances.
      • Caution: cast iron retains heat for several hours after the last burn.
